The Managed Lands Deer Program gives Texas landowners more flexibility to manage deer on their property, with longer seasons and harvest numbers based on their own land instead of standard county limits. Run by Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPWD), the program is voluntary and open to both high fence and low fence ranches. If you own a ranch or are thinking about buying one, here is how MLDP works and whether it makes sense for your property.

What Is the Managed Lands Deer Program?

The Managed Lands Deer Program, often called MLDP, is a TPWD program that supports sound management of native wildlife and habitat on private land in Texas. Enrolled properties receive a deer harvest recommendation and MLDP tags for white-tailed deer, and in some cases mule deer. Those tags allow an extended season and more flexible harvest than the general season, so landowners can manage herd size, buck-to-doe ratios, and overall herd quality.

Harvest Option vs. Conservation Option

MLDP has two options, and the right one depends on how hands-on you want to be.

Harvest Option: A self-service option with no habitat management plan or biologist visit required. You enroll online, receive a harvest recommendation, and print your tags.

Conservation Option: You work with a TPWD biologist on customized recommendations. In return, you must report deer population data and complete three department-approved habitat management practices each year. This option also covers mule deer.

MLDP Fees

Harvest Option: $30 per management unit.
Conservation Option: $300 for the first management unit and $30 for each additional unit, or $30 per unit for members of a wildlife management cooperative.

Fees are set by TPWD and can change, so confirm current rates on the official Managed Lands Deer Program page before you enroll.

Enrollment Deadlines

Harvest Option: Enrollment runs from May 1 to September 1 and must be renewed every year.
Conservation Option: Enrollment runs from April 2 to June 15. It renews automatically as long as your harvest reports are submitted by April 1.

Harvest numbers for both options are due by April 1 each year.

How MLDP Seasons and Tags Work

MLDP seasons for white-tailed deer typically run from early October through the end of February, longer than the general season in most counties. There is no personal or annual bag limit for the type of deer your tags cover, but every deer harvested must be tagged with an MLDP tag right away. Tags are only valid on the property they were issued for, and they stay on the deer until it reaches its final destination.

Is the Managed Lands Deer Program Right for Your Ranch?

MLDP is a good fit for landowners who want to actively manage their deer herd rather than just hunt it. It is especially common on high fence ranches, where owners control the herd inside the fence and want harvest numbers that match their own property. Low fence owners can benefit too, and neighboring low fence landowners can combine contiguous tracts into an aggregate to enroll together.

If you mainly hunt a few weekends a year and are happy with general season limits, the standard season may be all you need.

How to Enroll in MLDP

  1. Create an account in TPWD’s Land Management Assistance (LMA) online system.
  2. Draw your property boundaries on the map.
  3. Choose the Harvest Option or the Conservation Option and submit your application during the enrollment window.
  4. Pay the fee, accept your harvest recommendation, and print your MLDP tags.

Buying a Ranch Enrolled in MLDP

If you are buying a ranch that is already enrolled, ask the seller which option it is in, how long it has been enrolled, and for past harvest records and population data. Those records show how the herd has been managed and what you can expect. Also confirm with TPWD how enrollment carries over after closing, since the new owner will need to meet program requirements going forward.
